Netbook pioneer Asustek eyes recovery; bets on China

|

Taiwan's Asustek is pinning its recovery hopes on emerging markets such as China as the pioneer of netbooks struggles to compete with bigger rivals such as Hewlett-Packard and Acer.
Asustek expects a slew of product launches, set for the second half of the year, to help it stem the decline in revenue and profit margins, as it takes a beating due to the increasing popularity of low-cost netbook PCs.

"We're seeing a lot of growth momentum from China, and expect to grow our market share there for the rest of the year," Chief Executive Jerry Shen told investors on Tuesday. "Eastern Europe is also growing quite well, so things should improve from now on."

Pioneered by Asustek in 2007, netbooks have since been rolled out by other brands such as Hewlett-Packard, Acer and Dell, dealing a blow to Asustek.

On Monday, Nokia, the world's top cellphone maker, said it would start to make netbooks, entering a fiercely competitive but fast-growing market.

Asustek swung to an operating profit in April-June after two straight quarters of losses, having laid off staff and slashed products to emerge leaner.

The global PC sector has picked up in recent months, with Intel declaring the worst over and research firms such as IDC raising their forecasts for the year.

Analysts, however, remained cautious on Asustek's prospects.

"It's the traditional peak season anyway, so it's not spectacular," said Alex Huang, research director at Mega Securities.

Asustek expects to ship about 1.8 million notebooks and 1.5 million netbooks in the current quarter, up as much as 50 percent from the preceding three months.

The higher shipments are mainly due to an increase in demand from students returning to school and ahead of the year-end peak holiday shopping season, the company said.

Asustek is making a foray into the fast-growing smartphone market with location device maker Garmin, but it has set modest targets for itself that underscore its vulnerability as a new player in the highly competitive sector.

"We're going up against some very big players in the smartphone sector, and we know how difficult it is," Shen said. "This is a sector that we intend to cultivate slowly, especially from next year onwards."

Many analysts are skeptical at the rising number of PC brands crowding into smartphones, and highlight the difference in how the two products are sold and marketed.

Asustek reported a bigger-than-expected net loss of T$131 million ($3.9 million) for April-June, hit by a massive T$953 million foreign exchange loss as the Taiwan dollar appreciated by more than 3 percent against the U.S. dollar.
The overall loss was way below market expectations for T$1 billion net profit, and worse than the T$5.64 billion reported a year ago.

Asustek shares have risen 43 percent so far this year, versus a 48 percent gain on the broader market.

Yahoo to compete with Bing despite Microsoft deal

|

Yahoo Inc said on Monday it has revamped its search to compete against Microsoft Corp's Bing, even as it relies on the Redmond giant to power its queries.

The announcement of plans to put a new face on Yahoo Messenger and Mail and add functions to its search engine came after news that Google and Yahoo each lost a fraction of a point of U.S. search share to Microsoft last month [nN18441019].

"We are not a version of Bing," Prabhakar Raghavan, a senior vice president of Yahoo, said to reporters at the company's headquarters.

"We are Yahoo and that will continue...We collaborate on the back-end but we are competitors on the front-end," he said,

At a press event held at their headquarters, the company gave more details of its complex relationship with Microsoft.

At the end of July, Microsoft and Yahoo signed a 10-year deal under which search on Yahoo's websites will be generated by Microsoft's new Bing search engine. The companies hope the deal will take effect early next year.

Microsoft will license Yahoo's search technology, allowing it to integrate certain aspects of it into Bing. Microsoft's advertising search product, AdCenter, will also replace Yahoo's equivalent product, Panama.

Raghavan said that when Microsoft sends ads along with its answers to queries, Yahoo may or may not use all of them, depending on a complex formula.

A new series of boxes to the left of search results and ads will give users more ways to make use of what they have found, said Larry Cornett, Yahoo vice president of search products.

A box powered by Internet security company McAfee Inc, will filter dangerous links. Videos will play without leaving the search page.

A box to sites like Yelp, which provides user feedback on stores and restaurants, can be clicked to check out the quality of a sushi restaurant without leaving the search page.

Cornett, who demonstrated the new approach, said it was undergoing testing and will be available some time this year.

Comscore reported Microsoft gained 0.5 percent in July, but still only holds 8.9 percent of the search market, compared to 64.7 percent for Google and 19.3 percent for Yahoo.

Yahoo shares closed up 20 cents, or 1.35 percent, to end the day at $14.99 on the Nasdaq.

Microsoft, Yahoo join in opposing Google books deal

|

Microsoft Corp and Yahoo! Inc are joining a group of opponents to a class action settlement that gives Google Inc the right to digitize millions of books, the companies said on Friday.

The companies are becoming part of the Open Book Alliance, made up of nonprofits and libraries that have raised a red flag against Google's plan to digitize books and put them on the Internet.

"Yes, we've agreed to participate in the coalition," a spokesman for Microsoft said. A Yahoo spokeswoman said they had also signed on.Amazon.com Inc has also reportedly joined, but a spokeswoman said: "We don't comment on rumor or speculation."

Critics say the deal gives Google the unimpeded ability to set prices for libraries, once they scan books and put them on the Internet. If the service becomes a necessity for libraries they would face monopoly pricing, Google's opponents say.

They also say it would also allow Google -- and only Google -- to digitize so-called orphan works, which could pose an antitrust concern.

Orphan works are books or other materials that are still covered by U.S. copyright law, but it is not clear who owns the rights to them.

Google took issue with the criticism. "The agreement is not exclusive. If improved by the court it will expand access to millions of books in the U.S.," said Gabriel Stricker, a spokesman for Google.

"The agreement stands to inject more competition into the digital book space, so it's understandable why our competitors would fight hard to prevent more competition," he said.

New York University law professor James Grimmelmann, who runs thepublicindex.org site, which carries documents on the case, said he is waiting to see the arguments of the Open Books Alliance.

"Google is right that there are access benefits to making books available," said Grimmelmann. "The question of whether this is good or bad for competition is hotly contested. There are clear ways that the settlement could create a concentration of power, especially over orphan books."

The deal is under review or investigation by the U.S. Justice Department, the European Commission and a group of U.S. state attorneys general.

The proposed settlement was reached in October, 2008, to settle a lawsuit filed in 2005 by the Author's Guild, when Google began scanning books.

The Guild and a group of publishers has alleged copyright infringement.

Google has agreed to pay $125 million to create a Book Rights Registry, where authors and publishers can register works and receive compensation from institutional subscriptions or book sales. A hearing on approval of the settlement is set for October 7 in U.S. District Court in New York.

Rreason to switch to Windows 7

|

Landing in stores October, Windows 7 is sparking a surprisingly heated debate (in our forums, at least) on whether or not upgrading from XP is a good idea. If you're in the "nay" camp, we're going to lay out seven reasons why you should consider switching your stance to "yay."
Landing in stores October, Windows 7 is sparking a surprisingly heated debate (in our forums, at least) on whether or not upgrading from XP is a good idea. If you're in the "nay" camp, we're going to lay out seven reasons why you should consider switching your stance to "yay."
When scanning our list, we politely encourage you to ask yourself, "Do I really want to continue using an eight-year-old operating system?" Followed by "Don't I deserve better?"
Because no matter how comfortable you are with XP, you do deserve an OS that's both newer and better, and Windows 7 will deliver. Not convinced? Then read on.

You Asked for This

Remember Vista? We know most of you don't want to, and that's because the OS fell short of many consumers' expectations. As a result, many -- especially power users -- elected to skip Vista entirely, and have continued running Windows XP. Hence Microsoft's attempt at a redo with Windows 7. This time around, the software giant made an effort to crowdsource feedback from Microsoft enthusiasts by distributing a free beta version of Windows 7 in January.

You complained, you demanded, and in response Microsoft slapped something together to ship October 22. The result? The overall presentation of Windows 7 is familiar enough to welcome XP users, but fundamentally it's different enough to make you change the way you think of Microsoft. (I can vouch for that, being a long-time Mac user and ex-Windows fan).

Upgrading Won't Screw You Over

Microsoft has its loyal fans in mind, including those clinging for dear life to XP. The tech giant promises that Windows 7 has been coded to support almost every piece of software that runs on your XP system. If, in the rare case one of your XP programs doesn't work on Windows 7, you can still run it in a virtual environment called XP Mode. What's especially cool about this mode is you won't have to toggle between an XP emulator and Windows 7. The apps running in XP Mode appear like ordinary windows that are part of Windows 7.

Also, the Windows 7 upgrade chart may appear intimidating and confusing, but prior to release Microsoft plans to release a compatibility checker that will automatically scan your system to tell you which version of Windows 7 is for you.

Automatically Installed Device Drivers

This is only a minor improvement, but it addresses a major pain in the ass in earlier versions of Windows. Who has time to scour the internet for a device driver to work with hardware such as a video card or an external hard drive? Life is too short for that garbage work, and fortunately Windows 7 does this chore for you.

Plug in a new piece of hardware, and the OS will find and install the driver for you. XP has this feature, sort of, but it works better in Vista and much better in Windows 7. No more of those annoying yellow question marks. Good riddance.

Piracy

Yarr! We know there are plenty of you out there downloading pirated digital booty, especially in Windows land. But it's never been convenient to be a pirate compared with being a paying customer. For example, if you're a legitimate buyer purchasing movies off iTunes, you can easily stream your media to your legitimately purchased Apple TV. If you're a pirate, you'd have to go through roundabout programs and hardware to re-create the experience.

Windows 7 is an OS practically made for pirates. Want to display your movies, photos or music on your TV? Bam! Windows Media Player will do that out of the box if you have a Wi-Fi enabled TV, or an Xbox. No extra programs to install: Windows Media Player seamlessly communicates with your Wi-Fi device to display your illegal content in all its glory on your fancy HD TV.

And sharing media is easy, too. Want to download all of your brother's music? Bam! HomeGroup, an easy networking feature included in Windows 7, will make that super easy between computers running the OS. Immediately upon plugging in to your network with Ethernet or Wi-Fi, HomeGroup will ask if you wish to join the group on the network, allowing you to set up easy file sharing in minutes.

A Better Interface

The new Aero features, which we covered in our Windows 7 first look, will change the way you interact with your computer. Aero Peek will prove the most useful: The feature displays outlines of all your open windows behind your active window. Each outlined box contains a thumbnail previewing its corresponding window to help you choose.

Gizmodo's Matt Buchanan, who has been using AeroPeek for six months, provides an excellent perspective on Aero: "It breaks the instinct to maximize windows as you're using them; instead, you simply let windows hang out, since it's much easier to juggle them." Makes sense, doesn't it, for a generation of multitaskers? Aren't you tired of Alt-Tabbing over and over and over?

Another feature, Aero Snap, makes it easier to resize and tile windows to fit the available space. (Read more about Aero Snap and Aero Peek.)

Words aren't enough. You really have to try the OS to understand why these UI enhancements are a big deal. We get the idea that the people dismissing Windows 7 haven't yet tinkered with it, and we highly encourage you to download the release candidate and give it a test drive. But do it now: The download is only available until August 20.

More Advanced Hardware Support

Technology evolves faster than living organisms, and Windows 7 is also designed to work well with upcoming hardware. Touchscreens are getting more popular in the mainstream (thanks largely to the iPhone), and sure enough Windows 7 includes multitouch support. (Check out a video demoing how it works.) If 2010 is indeed the year of the tablet, as we predict, then Windows 7 just might be the winning OS in that new landscape.

If you're not interested in touchscreens, think multiple processor cores. At some point when multicore computers are more widely available, affordable and energy efficient, an eight-year-old OS like Windows XP isn't going to know what to do with all that extra processing power. Microsoft has already hinted that Windows 7 will scale to 256 processors.

That's more than enough, but you get the picture: This is a new operating system designed for newer systems. You're going to need to upgrade eventually, so why not do it now, so you can get a good feel for the OS, rather than later?

The 64-bit version of Windows 7 can handle bigger system memory, too, scaling up to 192 GB of RAM, compared to the 4-GB limit for the 32-bit versions of Windows XP and Windows 7, and 128 GB for the less common 64-bit edition of Windows XP.

Oh, yeah, speaking of new devices -- Windows 7 is tweaked to better suit those trendy netbooks, too. These puny devices are low-powered and thus limited in performance, and Windows 7 will run better on them thanks to its improved memory management. For example, Windows XP allocated video memory for unseen windows, but Windows 7 does not. It uses video memory only for visible windows. That equates to a more responsive netbook with longer battery life.

It Looks Sexier

A superficial reason, we know, but we've become so intimate with our gadgets that their looks are important, too. Windows 7 will make your new PC look new, unlike the boring-as-vanilla UI of Windows XP. Extra detail, polish, gradients and a UI that will clear your desktop of clutter should all make Windows 7 a more attractive choice.

Apple on track to sell 2.7 million Macs in Q4

|

Based on U.S. retail sales data released Monday afternoon by the NPD Group, Apple (AAPL) is on track to sell 2.7 to 2.8 million Macs and 9.5 to 10.5 million iPods in its fourth fiscal quarter, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.
Mac unit sales came in up 2% year over year in July, which according to Munster implies 3% to 7% growth for the quarter that ends in September — roughly in line with the Street's expectation of 5%.
"With just one month of data," writes Munster, "it is way too early to make a call on the quarter given ~50% of Mac sales in the quarter typically happen in the month of Sept."

He adds that international sales are growing faster than domestic for both Macs and iPods, which is why he expects reported sales to be slightly higher than NPD's numbers would suggest. He also notes that July 2008 was a particularly good month for the Mac, with unit sales up 43% over July '07, so achieving 2% growth over that is no mean feat. The next two months should be easier in terms of showing year-over-year growth.

Things aren't looking quite so rosy for the iPod.
iPod unit sales were down 17% year over year in July, according to NPD, which is worse than Muster expected.
But once again, Munster notes that international sales are growing faster than domestic. He also expects a "reacceleration" in September thanks to Apple's back-to-school promotion, which offers a free iPod with the purchase of any (discounted) Mac. Bottom line: Munster expects Apple to end the quarter with iPod unit sales down 5% to 14% year-to-year, roughly in line with the Street's expectations (-10%).

One final data point: the average selling price for Macs in July was down 4% from the previous month, according to NPD. That's a lot better than the rest of the industry, which has seen ASPs plummet thanks to the growing popularity of netbooks selling in the $399 to $499 range. Muster's model calls for ASPs to drop 6% quarter over quarter.

No.1 in Japan is apple's iphone

|

The iPhone, which has had a tough time competing in the Japanese market, finally broke through in July with the launch of the iPhone 3GS.

According to a report in Electronista, market data from Gfk Japan shows the 32 GB iPhone in the No. 1 spot for July, ahead of Japanese-made phones from Sharp, Panasonic (PC), NEC, Casio and Sony Ericsson (a Japanese/Swedish joint venture).
The 16 GB model came in at No. 9, ahead of the Sharp SH001.

A earlier report from the market research company BCN showing the two iPhone models occupying the No. 1 and No. 2 spots for the week of June 22 to 28 was discounted because that was the week Apple (AAPL) launched the 3GS in Japan.
That the 32 GB iPhone ended the month of July in first place is harder to dismiss as a transient, opening day phenomenon.

Shapes of DNA have been used to enhance the production of circuits for next-generation computer chips

|

Researchers reporting in Nature Nanotechnology have now shown how to get engineered "DNA origami" to self-organise on silicon.

The origami can be designed to serve as a scaffold for electronic components just six billionths of a metre apart.
Making chips with components closer together leads to smaller devices and faster computers.
The six nanometre mark is nearly eight times better than the current industry produces.
Several research groups have shown that DNA itself can be used to store or manipulate data, and the juggling of DNA in a test tube or within bacteria has been shown to solve simple computational tasks.
The current method, by contrast, leverages the ability to design DNA strands into regular shapes such as triangles.

The computer industry would like to make use of next-generation materials with favourable electronic properties such as carbon nanotubes or nanowires.Such structures are tiny and difficult to manipulate, but the chemical groups hanging off DNA helices could be used as anchor points for them.
Those anchor points can be as little as six nanometres (nm) apart, making these DNA-bound circuit components smaller and thus faster than can currently be produced. The current industry standard for etching electronic components from larger structures - a so-called "top down" approach - has components at a distance of 45nm.

What makes the technique particularly useful is that the regular shapes of the circuit-loaded DNA origami allows them to fit neatly into shaped pits the researchers bored into silicon or carbon using standard techniques. This self-assembly occurs when a liquid filled with the origami is put in contact with the etched surfaces in what the authors call a case of "bottom-up keys" fitting into "top-down locks".

Because the eventual placement of the components puts them so much closer, the approach could lead to computers that are both smaller and faster. However, the motivations are also economic - industry-wide shifts to smaller components are phenomenally expensive to the manufacturers.

"The combination of this directed self-assembly with today's fabrication technology eventually could lead to substantial savings in the most expensive and challenging part of the chip-making process," said Spike Narayan, a science and technology manager at IBM's Almaden research centre.
Fuller integration of the technique could take as much as 10 years, IBM said.

Health care reach expands with wireless monitoring

|

Cardiologist Steven Greenberg keeps tabs on his patients around the clock, but he doesn't have to lose much sleep to do so.Greenberg is able to monitor his patients daily, thanks to a device, billed as the world's first wireless pacemaker. The pacemaker communicates with a monitoring system in the patient's home, vital information is then gathered and automatically relayed to Greenberg's office.Greenberg became the first doctor to implant the pacemaker in an operation which happened in the U.S. last month.
Since then he has inserted around a dozen of the pacemakers in his patients and says the treatment could soon become standard.

He envisions even more sophisticated devices that allow doctors to monitor other key vital signs like blood pressure and glucose levels to be developed down the line.

Besides daily updates, the device alerts him if it detects any irregular heartbeats which the pacemaker isn't programmed to handle, thereby helping him stay a step ahead of potentially life-threatening problems.

"If a patient's asleep and you see this abnormal rate, you can bring them in, put them on a blood thinner and prevent them from having a stroke," said Greenberg, a heart specialist at the Arrhythmia and Pacemaker Center at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, NY.

The pacemaker, manufactured by St. Jude Medical, is the latest device to showcase the growing trend of using communications technology to deliver health care services.

Greenberg told CNN the wireless device not only provides safety but convenience for patients, who are able to rest easier and can make fewer trips to the doctor's office.

Increasingly new technologies are making it possible for doctors to keep tabs on their patients from afar and around the clock.

At the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) at Galveston, Texas, doctors do everything from running mental health screens to providing post-surgery follow-ups via video terminal.

The academic medical center's telemedicine program handles roughly 60,000 patient encounters each year and has delivered care to a swathe of patients, from prison inmates to researchers in Antarctica and passengers on cruise ships.

As Dr. Ben Raimer of UTMB sees it, remote medicine is another tool for doctors to expand the reach of their stethoscope. It's being used to provide care to under served communities worldwide, particularly in areas like the developing world.

Distance treatment doesn't only help broaden access of care, it also enhances care and lowers costs, said Raimer. "It expedites getting the patient to the right place and to the right level of care," he said.

The virtual doctor has been made possible by the spread of high-speed Internet access and wireless technology.

"Devices are getting smaller, and it's an awful lot easier to connect everything together," said Jim Briggs, director of the Telemedicine and E-health Information Service run by the University of Portsmouth in the UK.

Dr. Alexander Vo, executive director of the UTMB Center for Telehealth Research and Policy, expects virtual care to become even more widespread in the future.

With health care systems around the world in crisis, now is the time for this technology to really take off, he said.

"All of this technology is being developed to provide access to care. "With access we can start providing preventive care which prevents inappropriate hospitalization and can really lead to tremendous cost savings," he said.

While Wi-Fi and other new technologies will increasingly make electronic delivery of health care easier, don't expect trips to see the doctor to disappear altogether.

According to Greenberg, even though he monitors his patients from a distance, his patients still make routine office visits.

But now when they come in, he's able to provide better treatment. Since all the information from the device has been transmitted to him ahead of time, he doesn't have to gather diagnostic information in the office and can focus on his patient's needs.
"Before there would be reams of data to read when they came in, but now I can look them in the face and concentrate on them," he said.

Newer Magnetoresistive RAM (MRAM) many times faster than RAM

|

If you always desired for a fast computer, an ordinary RAM may just not be a solution. German physicists and engineers have thus developed the Magnetoresistive Random Access Memory (MRAM), which is not only faster but also more energy efficient. MRAM seems like it will boost the mobile computing industry and stores the level of charge by changing the north-south direction of a magnet’s field. IBM and other manufacturers are planning to use MRAM, which could spin electrons to flip the magnetic fields, which is also known as the spin-torque MRAM, something that the German physicists have further improvised and built the fastest so far.
By building tiny pillars of 165 nanometres, which act, as variable magnets at the top end, allow current to pass through from bottom to top and the spin of the electrons take place. The fields are flipped and it takes a while for it to settle to it’s new orientation. Then, the north and south axis draw circles in the air before finally settling which causes a wobble. Since this depends on the magnetic field and the wobble that takes place in a field, the German team developed a way to observe and control a magnetic field’s wobble during and after the flip. Right now, the MRAM is about 10 times faster than a MRAM, which needs 10 nanoseconds, and the conventional RAM needs 30 nanoseconds. This speed will definitely increase in the months and years to come.
