SK Telecom and Bell Labs have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which provides a framework for research projects in the next-generation communications networks.
In the field of wireless technology, one potential project involving the two companies is to define what forms of wireless networks, especially applications that run through the network, will look like 4G network exceeds that desired by the operator to be launched in the coming years.
Other potential areas to focus on developing methods to enable complex networks to manage and configure itself. Demand for self-optimizing is expected to grow due to the network operator aims to achieve better efficiency.
Through these relations, whether SK Telecom and Bell Labs can complement their needs. SK Telecom expects to cooperate in core technologies such as noise control, network automation and virtualization in multi-network environment, which will contribute to optimize the network transmission and reduce network maintenance costs.
This project will serve as a platform for Bell Labs to deepen their ability in the field of new technologies and expand the scope of research programs in Korea.
"This agreement is an opportunity for both companies to collaborate on core telecommunication technologies in the future through a combination of various end-user services and capabilities in the commercialization of the network owned by SK Telecom and the power of R & D Bell Labs in the field of communication that have been proved by the market," said Jae Wan Byun, Senior Vice President and Head of the Institute of Network Technology SK Telecom, through its official statement on Friday (23/10/2009).
"We believe that the ability of leading Bell Labs research in network technology combined with market experience of SK Telecom can create new growth opportunities for Alcatel-Lucent and allows SK Telecom to achieve strategic objectives," said Debasis Mitra, Head of Global Research and University Partnership, Bell Labs.
