If using Windows Vista, you may be familiar with ExFAT, aka the Extended File Allocation Table. New file system from Microsoft is presenting a leap in the size of files that can be stored in consumer electronics devices and speed of access.

With ExFAT, flash-based memory devices like USB flash disk or MP3 player, can handle the file size much larger, ranging from 32GB to 256TB. SDXC Card (Secure Digital Extended Capacity) now can achieve true transfer rate of 300Mbps. So says Microsoft.

Well, Microsoft has announced a new licensing program for these ExFAT. "There was an explosion in the use of rich files audio and video," said David Kaefer (General Manager, Intellectual Property Licensing, Microsoft). "ExFAT is an ideal file system that provides delivery of audio and video files fast and reliable. This is an important technology in Windows 7, and now we license them widely to the industry. We want to encourage and support its partners to build products that contain technology this. "

"ExFAT file system supports files that big volume, large files, and on-disk layout of a better order," said James Taylor (President, SD Association). "And the SD Association supports the plan of specifications that provide SDXC transfer behavior more quickly to consumers, support for files that were very large and seamless portability between devices. We hope to integrate technology into our products. "

Currently Microsoft already has a license agreement ExFAT with Sony, Canon and Sanyo. SanDisk also approved the adoption ExFAT file system in extra-large-capacity media.
