Good news for wheelchair users. A recently developed robotic legs to help users to get up and walk again with both feet. Even able to go up and down stairs.
Robot leg from New Zealand was named Rex aka Robotic exoskeleton. The robot, will be attached to the side legs to support the user's body. By all appearances, this robot-like legs with feet Robocop, robot technology, thanks to a super cop.
"I will not forget how it feels to see my feet to walk when you first use the Rex," said Allen Hayden, filled with tears. Allen was the first person who tries to use Rex. He suffered a broken spine injury after a motorcycle accident.
"People told me to look ahead when walking, but I can not stop looking at my feet moving," he said, amazed.
Robot with a weight 84 pounds (about 38 kilograms) was developed by Rex Bionics company based in Auckland. Company founder, Richard Little and Robert Irving, has a mother who uses a wheelchair. That's one reason why they understand very well the difficulties of wheelchair users.
Seven years ago, Irving was once sentenced to hit multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disease that attacks the central nervous system. In some cases can cause paralysis.
Since then, the two founders of this company's robot legs decided to create a robot that is able to assist wheelchair users to walk.
Robot with two hours of endurance of this batteries have several limitations for the person who will ride. The user must have height of about 4-6 feet (about 120-180 centimeters), weighs less than 220 pounds (less than 100 pounds) and have a waist circumference of less than 14.9 inches (37.85 centimeters).
The users will be able to control the robot using a joystick with foot and hand control pad to maneuver that helps the mobility device. It's just that this robot is not able to walk in places that are not smooth or flat surface, like snow, sand, grass and mud.
Rex is quite expensive given the price, U.S. $ 150 thousand. Moreover, the foot "Robocop" is newly available in New Zealand. For other countries, reportedly will be marketed from next year.
